Book : Newes from the dead
Author : Mary Hooper
Story : The blurb is the only real way to describe it : "the gruesome but true tale of the girl who survives the gallows". And that's what it's about. It starts with a girl, freshly hung, telling her story of how she came to be hung while being held in what she thinks is a purgatory, a nothingness, unable to move or speak. And also about the group of doctors who begin her dissection.
Opinion: I bought this book on blind faith I suppose. The first few pages were interesting, and so was the rest of it. It had a good few annoying points, it was written so that it was a girl from the 15th Century, talking as such, which became annoying when she talked about things like "ribbands" and the purposely misspelled words pissed me off at the end of it. But it wasn’t bad though, slightly depressing, but it was good enough to keep me reading to the end. It was nicely gritty, the filth of urchin streets kind of gritty, and it in no way sweetened the reality of life, back in the day. All aspects of the book were brilliantly described, although the main characters’ naivety at the beginning of the book is a little annoying, but understandable.... kinda. Anne (main character) is a strong character, who is very well written. It wasn’t Earth shattering, but I liked it.
Rating : *** (3/5)
